Getting Around

Car hire with driver is recommended for day trips to Phong Dien market and rural villages.
About Can Tho
Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta and the economic, cultural, and transportation hub of southern Vietnam's river heartland. Sitting at the confluence of the Can Tho and Hau rivers, it is the ideal base for exploring the Mekong Delta — a vast network of rivers, canals, rice paddies, and floating villages that produce much of Vietnam's food.
The city's star attraction is its floating markets, the most famous of which — Cai Rang — is one of the largest in Southeast Asia. Before dawn, hundreds of wooden boats laden with tropical fruit, vegetables, and goods gather on the river to trade, creating a spectacle unlike anything else in Vietnam. A short boat ride from the city, Cai Rang is best visited at 5–7am when trading is at its peak.
Beyond the floating markets, Can Tho rewards slow exploration. The riverside promenade (Hai Ba Trung Street) buzzes with cafes and local life. Traditional wooden stilt houses line narrow canals. Orchards bursting with dragon fruit, mangosteen, durian, and rambutan surround the city on all sides. Cycling through rural Mekong villages, sampling fresh tropical fruit at a floating orchard, and watching the sunset from a river boat are among the most memorable experiences in Vietnam.
Can Tho International Airport (VCA) connects the city directly to Hanoi and other domestic hubs, making it easy to include as part of a longer Vietnam itinerary. From Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho is a comfortable 3-hour drive via the Mekong Expressway.
